Chinese scientists successfully develop new materials for pollution control

The team led by Huang Fuqiang, chief researcher of the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has successfully developed new pollution control materials. Huang Fuqiang introduced that the new material is a mixture of three-dimensional graphene tubes and black titanium dioxide. Its principle is "physical adsorption + photochemical catalytic degradation." The three-dimensional graphene tube is responsible for firmly “grabbing” toxic organics. The black titanium dioxide acts as a photocatalyst and can absorb up to 95% of the entire solar spectrum, degrading toxic organics to carbon dioxide and water.

The test results of the Shanghai Light Industry Environmental Protection Technology Research Center and the Environmental Engineering Key Laboratory of the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Environmental Sciences show that after 7 days of treatment, representative indicators such as chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus are all inferior to the five types of water. In Feidong County, Hefei City, Anhui Province, the team remedied the upper reaches of the Dingguang River. Xue Tiecheng, director of the Water Environment Management Division of the Feidong County Environmental Protection Bureau, said that the Dingguang River is a typical compound polluted river. After this treatment, various water quality indicators will increase by more than 60%.

According to reports, the new materials can also degrade industrial wastewater such as printing and dyeing wastewater, tannery wastewater, etc., efficiently adsorb toxic heavy metals, and add 1 gram of porous new material to adsorb 1.476 grams of lead ions. After simple acid treatment, they can be processed into high-value materials. . At present, this achievement has already gone out of the laboratory, achieving large-scale production and obtaining more than 50 invention patents.
